These are referred to as Q1 and Q2. The message is tragically not relayed to Romeo and he hears instead of her death from his servant. Juliet fakes her death and lies in a tomb waiting for Romeo to come so they can run away together. Tybalt, still enraged, seeks out Romeo and challenges him to a duel, but Romeo declines the fight, believing Tybalt should be his new kinsman. Had he been wealthier, he might have been able to afford to value his morals more than money, and refused to sell poison to Romeo. After their initial meeting, Juliet secretly professes her love for Romeo who is listening at the bottom of her balcony. Publisher Nicholas Rowe was the first critic to ponder the theme of the play, which he saw as the just punishment of the two feuding families.

Juliet kills herself with his dagger. Romeo kills Paris and, reaching Juliet's body at last, embraces her and drinks the poison, kissing her as he dies. He does not wish to see his party disrupted, and speaks well of Romeo's reputation in Verona. The two families then arrive, and the Friar comes forward to explain the tragic sequence of events. Romeo takes his poison and dies, while Juliet awakens from her drugged coma. Otway's version was a hit, and was acted for the next seventy years. Romeo reluctantly agrees to go when he learns that Rosaline has been invited. A medieval building of brick and battlements is identified as the house of the Montagues, and a tall building of mellow brick thought to date to the thirteenth century is that of the Capulets. Meanwhile, Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, sends Romeo a challenge to a duel. Romeo and Juliet is a Shakespearean tragedy.
